Once Upon a Time at the Movies

Wilhelm scream

What started off as a mere death scream stock sound effect had entered popular culture through its repeated, and more often as an in joke, implementation in films, TV, and interactive media. It found new lease of life in 1977 during the escape from the Death Star in Star Wars and has been used time and time again when an unfortunate mook meets their untimely demise. It came full circle when video game company Rockstar Games implemented it into their love letter to the old west in Red Dead Redemption.

Monument Valley

Nothing more than a series of rock formations in the desert, the five-square miles that make up Monument Valley has to be the most travelled part of land in cinematic history. Indeed, John Ford first used in Stagecoach. Since then films have returned to it as a right of passage.
